29 Children Undergo Free Open-Heart Surgeries in Anambra State Medical Mission

Over 1,000 Patients Treated by 82 Foreign Doctors in Oraifite
In a remarkable medical mission held in Oraifite, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, 29 children received free open-heart surgeries, while over 1,000 patients benefited from various treatments provided by 82 foreign doctors. The medical team, hailing from the United States, Sweden, and Canada, operated under the VOOM Foundation and the Sir Emeka Okwuosa Foundation.
Comprehensive Medical Services Offered
On Tuesday, the medical mission focused on delivering free cardiovascular evaluations, medical care, and medicated eyeglasses to individuals with eye conditions. Additionally, walkers were distributed to patients with mobility issues, alongside special gift packs for the community.
Mrs. Chidinma Okoye, Executive Director of the Sir Emeka Okwuosa Foundation (SEOF), reported that the mission successfully facilitated free open-heart surgeries for 29 children. Over 15 adults also received subsidized treatment for similar procedures, with some adults who could not afford even the subsidized costs being treated free of charge.
Advanced Cardiovascular Procedures
The mission included interventional cardiologists who performed catheterizations on 10 children. The foundation collaborated with Immaculate Heart Eye Clinic, Nkpor, to address a range of eye issues among the local population.
Okoye highlighted the ongoing impact of the Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital, stating, “Since its inauguration two years ago, we have successfully conducted a total of 120 open-heart surgeries at this world-class cardiovascular facility.”
Acknowledgments and Future Support
Shawn Pulliam, Executive Director of the VOOM Foundation USA, commended the dedication of the 82 volunteer doctors who participated in the mission. Rachael Crandall, Coordinator of VOOM Foundation Medical Missions, described the initiative as a significant milestone for the hospital and called for increased support from government and private organizations to sustain such efforts in the future.
