500 Graves Destroyed By Flood In Niger
In Mariga town, Mariga Local Government Council, Niger State, a flood has carried more than 500 dead out of their graves in a cemetery.
A local named Mohammed Aliyu claims that the River Mariga overflowed its banks and into the cemetery, which caused the bodies to be washed out of their graves.
He added that some of the remains are still missing and that on Wednesday morning, when the residents of Mariga woke up, they found corpses floating in the river.
He said that the state administration had been contacted by the district head and asked for prompt action, and they had replied quickly.
“The authorities in Mariga responded quickly, and as of this afternoon (Tuesday), about 200 dead had been found.” They continue to struggle to gain access to the area, he said.

Mohammed Aliyu, a local, claimed that the River Mariga burst its banks and spilled into the cemetery, causing the bodies to be washed out of their graves.
Additionally, he said that some of the victims of Mariga floodings are still missing and that on Wednesday morning the villagers found corpses floating in the river.
He claimed that the district head had contacted the state government and asked for fast action, and that they had promptly reacted.
As of this afternoon (Tuesday), over 200 remains have been found thanks to the quick action of the government officers.
Credible News also reported similarly case of Mariga, when Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi on Wednesday urged the state and federal governments to rescue of flooding victims in Jigawa, adding that nearly 100 lives have been lost and 100,000 Nigerians have been displaced.
Peter Obi, who stated this via his verified Twitter handle, tasked Nigerian governments to plan contingency measures which aimed at greater resiliency in times of natural disasters.
He said ”We can expect more of such jigawa and Mariga disasters, and as such, we must plan contingency measures aimed at greater resiliency in times of natural disasters.”
Peter Obi who also posted pictures of some of the floods victims said: ”News reports of the ravaging floods wreaking havoc in different communities in Jigawa State are not only disturbing but alarming. It is profoundly disturbing to learn that nearly 100 lives have been lost and 100,000 Nigerians have been displaced from their homes due to the flooding.
