Tragedy Strikes as Multi-Storey Building Collapses in Abuja, Many Feared Dead
Several individuals were feared dead, and numerous others are still believed to be trapped in a multi-story structure that collapsed on Wednesday night in Abuja after a torrential downpour.
The structure is situated on the constantly busy Lagos Street in the Garki Village neighbourhood of Abuja’s Garki II sector.
After the tragedy, Tanko Dabo, an eyewitness, who spoke to News Direct, said the ground floor of the structure was crammed with shops, while the upper floors housed several flats.
He claimed that during the intense downpour, which began at about 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday, the building fell.
“After the structure collapsed, there was sobbing heard everywhere. Given that the building was completely inhabited, dozens of individuals are either dead or trapped.
He claimed that people were yelling and running erratically while the heavy rain persisted, describing the scene as one of helplessness.

Ikharo Attah, a Facebook user and a former adviser to the FCT’s immediate past minister, posted about the tragedy in the early hours of Thursday. He stated that seven people had so far been saved and sent to the hospital, while others were still stuck.
He verified that a rescue crew and other first responders arrived on the scene at around two in the morning and began conducting rescue operations.
However, he bemoaned that the rescue effort was cumbersome because it was still raining at the time.
They are scrambling to hire an excavator so they can rescue people from the wreckage, according to Attah.
