After armed soldiers invaded Umunze town on Thursday, there was apparently unrest in Anambra State’s Orumba South Local Government Area.
It was gathered that the Nkwo Market area was shot at by military personnel, who also gave the shopkeepers the order to close their stores.
Pandemonium resulted from that move as everyone frantically fled in search of safety.
All the nearby schools rapidly shuttered as parents evacuated their children, leaving only the Nkwo Market and the merchants there.
Within a short period of time, the roadways became equally deserted.
Trouble started when the soldiers stormed the crime scene at around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, injuring some of the locals, according to Chief John Akanyeonu, the town’s president general, who was quoted by Daily Sun.
He claimed that while some of those wounded by the soldiers’ gunfire were still fighting for their lives in various hospitals, one of them passed away early on Thursday morning.
Akanyeonu remarked, “There were several bullet wounds from yesterday. In fact, one of them passed away this morning at a very young age. They (the gunmen) strolled in from the direction of Abia State, opened fire on the soldiers at the bank, shot them all, then sped off in their car.
“When the soldiers arrived, they opened fire, shooting sporadically in the air.” Some people sustained gunshot injuries. I don’t know the exact number, but I saw about three: one girl, one boy, and this boy who lost his life early this morning. The boy operates a barbing salon here.

The PG said, “In their normal routine, the soldiers came down in their numbers, telling people to close their shops, and they gave them two hours to do that.” They shot live bullets too. After some time, people deserted that area.”
In response to a question about what the neighbourhood was doing, he stated, “We have made some calls to the DSS office and the DPO here. We also called a few senior soldiers, and I believe they are urging their colleagues to be cautious around our personnel.
“Every school in the area was closed. And there is no chance of opening again the next day. People were extremely terrified of them because of their behaviour.
People were seen fleeing for their lives in a viral video about the military onslaught. The video’s creator also displayed a pellet that he had chosen from the Nkwo Market neighbourhood.
Inability to reach DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state’s police public relations officer, on his phone line precluded attempts to speak with him.
