YABATECH Celebrates Academic Excellence: 254 Graduates Shine, Prepares to Honor Distinguished Figures at Convocation Ceremony
Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) is set to graduate 254 students with distinctions in their various academic disciplines during its 35th Convocation Ceremonies slated for November 23, 2023.
This is just as the institution would on that day honour Lady Christine Doja Otedola, Comrade Hassan Adebayo Sunmonu and Engr. Professor Babagana Umara Zulum.
YABATECH Rector, Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Abdul who disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing, said the institution would graduate a total of Seven Thousand, Seven Hundred and Seventeen (7,717) students.
According to him, “Two Hundred and Fifty-Four (254) of these students got distinction. One Thousand, Eight Hundred and Ninety-Three (1,893) students are graduating in Upper Credit division while Three Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty (3,940) students are graduating in Lower Credit and One Thousand, Six Hundred and Thirty (1630) are in the Pass grade.”
Dr Abdul who hinted that the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman would be guest of honour, said also that three personalities will be honoured during the convocation.
He said: “The College will be conferring fellowship awards on three outstanding Nigerians at the 35th Convocation Ceremony. They are: Lady Christine Doja Otedola, Comrade Hassan Adebayo Sunmonu and His Excellency, Engr. Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, CON.”
He explained that: “In line with the tradition and mandate of the polytechnic education, fellowship awards are conferred on esteemed and exemplary Nigerians who have contributed immensely to national development, education and other sectors including those who distinguish themselves in their areas of endeavours.
“The justification for the conferment of the prestigious fellowship awards on these revered Nigerians centers on their respective accomplishments within and outside Nigeria.
“Lady Christine Doja Otedola has been an accomplished public servant and philanthropist whose commitment to excellence and professionalism during her service years at the University of Lagos earned her the nickname ‘Madam Efficiency’ by the students and the staff.
“The Matriarch of the Otedola family, teacher and wife of the former Lagos State Governor Pa Michael Otedola, has played and is still playing significant roles in the sustenance and acceptance of Yaba College of Technology by the good people of Epe and Odoragushin town in particular. With her support, her husband, His Excellency, late Michael Otedola, former Governor of Lagos State donated the land where the College is situated in Odoragushin town of Epe.
“The family offered the land free of charge on the ground of their love for education and the development of the youths. Even at 91, Mama still plays a very active role in mentoring the staff and the students of the College. She remains a worthy role model to all Nigerians.”
On his part, the Rector continues:
“Comrade Hassan Adebayo Sunmonu is a Nigerian trade unionist, who was the first President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) formed in 1978. He is a former General-Secretary of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU).
“Throughout his career, Sunmonu has received numerous accolades and recognitions for his contributions. His impact on the Nigerian labour movement and political landscape has earned him the reputation of a resilient and dynamic leader.
“A worthy alumnus of Yaba College of Technology, Comrade Sunmonu once led YABATECH Students Union. Comrade Hassan Adebayo Sunmonu’s dedication to labour activism and advocacy for workers’ rights have left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s civil servants and private workers.
‘”His legacies serve as an inspiration for current and future generations of trade unionists and politicians, reinforcing the importance of standing up for justice and fairness in the society.
For Professor Zulum, he said: “His Excellency, Engr. Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, CON, mni, is a seasoned and accomplished administrator, whose experience spanned Local Government administration as a staff, education as a Polytechnic Rector and a University Lecturer who has contributed to the development of young men and women in the country before venturing into politics.
His astuteness and accomplishment in administration and management of people and resources won him the governorship position since 2019.
His sound intellect and leadership pedigree are pillars and reflections of his noble achievements. Through his leadership, he has become a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration to Nigerian youths.”
Meanwhile, the Rector noted that convocation ceremony will begin on November 17 and end on 23 November.
