Russia Denies Involvement in Nigeria’s Hunger Protests, Attributes Allegations to Western Media Campaigns

Moscow Dismisses Claims of Interference as Attempts to Undermine Bilateral Relations
The Russian government has firmly rejected allegations suggesting its involvement in the recent hunger protests in Nigeria, labeling the claims as part of a coordinated media campaign orchestrated by Western and Ukrainian officials. The Russian government insists that these allegations are an attempt to meddle in Nigeria’s internal affairs and deflect responsibility onto Russia.
Official Response to Allegations
In a letter addressed to the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, shared by Yury Paramonov, the official Press Secretary of the Russian embassy in Nigeria, Moscow criticized statements made by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, former Director of the British Council in Nigeria David Roberts, and Ukrainian Ambassador to Nigeria Ivan Kholostenko. These officials suggested that the sighting of Russian flags during the protests served as evidence of Moscow’s interference in Nigeria.
The protests, which were part of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement in August, saw some demonstrators waving Russian flags, leading to controversy and speculation about foreign influence.
Context of Recent Political Turmoil in West Africa
Russia has faced scrutiny over its perceived involvement in political upheavals in West African nations, including Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. These countries have recently experienced military coups and have sought to distance themselves from their former colonial ruler, France, while fostering closer ties with Russia. This realignment has raised concerns among Western nations regarding Russia’s growing influence in the region.
Moscow’s Rebuttal of Media Claims
In response to the accusations regarding the Nigerian protests, the Russian government asserted that the claims from U.S., British, and Ukrainian officials are unfounded and intended to damage the cordial relationship shared with Nigeria. Moscow urged the Nigerian government to disregard these allegations.
The letter emphasized, “The Embassy categorically rejects such accusations and reiterates that the Russian Federation neither had any involvement in the protests that occurred in the recent past nor does it have any connection to any potential future demonstrations or unrest.”
Commitment to Nigeria’s Sovereignty
The Russian government reiterated its respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty, emphasizing its adherence to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of independent states. Moscow condemned the media narratives as attempts to disrupt Nigeria’s political landscape and stressed its support for peaceful dialogue in resolving internal conflicts.
“We greatly value the level of relations between our two countries and express our unwavering support for the leadership and the people of Nigeria,” the letter stated.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Bilateral Relations
In a gesture of goodwill, the Russian Embassy conveyed President Vladimir Putin’s congratulations to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on the occasion of Nigeria’s National Day. The embassy expressed hopes for continued cooperation and deepening relations between the two nations, wishing for prosperity and stability for the Nigerian people and government.
As the situation develops, both nations appear committed to maintaining their diplomatic ties amidst ongoing challenges and external pressures.
