Federal Government Allocates Over N840 Billion for Major Road Rehabilitation Projects

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a substantial budget exceeding N840 billion for the rehabilitation of the 82-kilometer Section II of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Dual Carriageway. This vital roadway connects the Federal Capital Territory with Kaduna and Kano States, significantly improving transportation and logistics across these regions.

In addition to the carriageway rehabilitation, the funding will also cover the construction of the Bodo-Bonny road, which includes essential bridges across the Opobo Channel, and Route 430 in Rivers State. This investment is expected to bolster economic activities and enhance connectivity within the area.
- Minister of Works Urges Swift Project Completion
Engr. David Umahi, the Minister of Works, disclosed this development during a meeting with representatives from Julius Berger (Nigeria) Plc, the main contractor for the projects. He emphasized the urgency of completing these initiatives, highlighting their significance to President Bola Tinubu and the citizens relying on these routes.
- Project Details and Financial Breakdown
During the meeting, Umahi provided insights into the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) decision made on September 23, 2024. The council approved a re-scoping and financial adjustment for the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Dual Carriageway rehabilitation contract (No. 6350) and the Bodo-Bonny road project (No. 6247). The total contract sum amounts to N740,797,204,713.25 for the dual carriageway project and N80,076,361,036.13 for the Bodo-Bonny road.
- Call for Corporate Responsibility in Project Execution
Umahi urged contractors involved in federal projects to practice corporate nationalism, especially concerning price negotiations, amidst Nigeria’s challenging economic landscape. He stressed the importance of adhering to the approved budget to ensure project success.
- Timelines and Mobilization Requirements
The Minister outlined that Julius Berger (Nig.) Plc must mobilize across four sections of the Abuja-Zaria-Kaduna-Kano project to achieve completion within a 14-month timeframe. He underscored the need for prompt action, stating that negotiations must conclude swiftly to prevent contract termination.
- Ensuring Project Viability and Completion
Umahi reassured that the government is prepared to provide fresh mobilization funds to facilitate the projects. He also indicated that for the Bodo-Bonny project, a new contract sum of N280 billion has been agreed upon, with a completion target set for 12 months.
