Abia State Government to Implement N70,000 Minimum Wage Starting October 2024
Commitment to Workers’ Welfare and Infrastructure Development Announced
The Abia State Government has officially announced the commencement of payments for the new minimum wage of N70,000 to its workers, effective October 2024. This decision was shared during a press briefing by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, following the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Enhancing Workers’ Welfare
During the briefing, Kanu emphasized the government’s dedication to improving the welfare of its workforce. “The state government is committed to the minimum wage, and within the next few days, payment of the new minimum wage will commence,” he stated.
He further clarified that while the national minimum wage serves as a benchmark, the state is open to making adjustments as necessary. “If the governor wants to deviate from the national standard and pay higher, so be it,” Kanu added, indicating a flexible approach to workers’ compensation.
Road Infrastructure Projects Approved
In addition to the wage announcement, Kanu revealed that the government has approved the procurement of nine new road projects across the state’s three senatorial zones. This initiative aims to enhance transportation and infrastructure development within Abia State.
Success of the Clean Up Abia Initiative
The Commissioner also highlighted the successes of the “Clean Up Abia Initiative,” led by the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA). This initiative has played a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness in key areas such as Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia.
Kanu reported that ASEPA has deployed over 100 waste receptacles across the state between July and September, extending cleanliness efforts to the Lokpanta abattoir in Umunneochi LGA, as well as abattoirs in Uzuakoli and Arochukwu.
International Recognition for Environmental Management
In a notable development, Kanu mentioned that the United Nations Habitat has invited the Greater Aba Development Authority and ASEPA to a conference in Egypt to share Abia’s success story in environmental management. This recognition underscores the state’s commitment to sustainable practices and effective waste management.
