The Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC) is set to establish a CNG conversion centre in Makurdi, reinforcing its commitment to promoting sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions. The new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion centre will be integrated into BIPC’s Makurdi petrol station, which is currently undergoing major renovations.
CNG Conversion Centre in Makurdi Nears Completion
The remodeled station, once completed, will not only provide CNG refilling services but also serve as a CNG vehicle conversion hub, allowing vehicle owners to transition from petrol and diesel to CNG. The project aims to lower fuel costs, enhance transportation efficiency, and support eco-friendly mobility in Benue State.
According to Joyce Isiaku, Head of Corporate Communications at BIPC, significant progress has been made, with structural modifications almost complete and underground tank maintenance ongoing. Speaking after leading her team to inspect the project, she emphasized the company’s dedication to ensuring the facility meets international standards for safety and efficiency.

“This initiative aligns with the commitment of Governor Hyacinth Alia, President Bola Tinubu, and BIPC Managing Director Dr. Raymond Asemakaha to promoting sustainable energy solutions and reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels,” Isiaku stated.
Supporting Nigeria’s Green Energy Transition
The launch of the CNG conversion centre in Makurdi aligns with the Federal Government’s directive to encourage the adoption of alternative fuel sources in Nigeria. By promoting CNG usage, the government aims to cut carbon emissions, lower transportation costs, and increase energy efficiency nationwide.
Compressed Natural Gas is a cleaner and more economical alternative to petrol and diesel. It produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions, thereby improving air quality and contributing to Nigeria’s climate action goals.
Economic and Environmental Benefits for Benue State
The CNG conversion centre in Makurdi is expected to stimulate economic growth by generating job opportunities for technicians, engineers, and service providers specializing in CNG vehicle conversion and maintenance. Additionally, both private vehicle owners and commercial operators will experience significant cost savings, as CNG is more affordable than conventional fuels.
“This remodeled filling station will function as a one-stop solution for CNG users, offering both fueling services and vehicle conversion expertise to encourage widespread adoption,” Isiaku added.
Beyond economic advantages, the initiative will contribute to reducing Nigeria’s carbon footprint, promoting eco-friendly transportation, and fostering a cleaner, healthier environment for Benue residents.
The Future of Sustainable Transportation in Benue
As the CNG conversion centre in Makurdi nears completion, BIPC remains committed to ensuring seamless access to CNG fueling and conversion services. With increasing global attention on sustainable energy adoption, this development positions Benue State as a leader in Nigeria’s alternative fuel transition.
The project underscores the state’s efforts to modernize its energy infrastructure, drive economic development, and create a more sustainable and affordable transportation system.
Residents and business owners in Benue can soon look forward to a cost-efficient, environmentally friendly, and readily available fuel alternative, marking a significant milestone in the region’s green energy journey.
Benefits of CNG Conversion for Cars
Converting a car to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) offers numerous advantages, making it an attractive alternative to petrol and diesel vehicles. One of the biggest benefits is cost savings—CNG is significantly cheaper than conventional fuels, allowing drivers to reduce their fuel expenses over time. Additionally, CNG-powered vehicles produce fewer carbon emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment and improved air quality.
CNG also extends engine lifespan as it burns more cleanly, leaving fewer carbon deposits, which reduces engine wear and tear. It is also a safer fuel option, with a higher ignition temperature and reduced risk of explosion in case of leakage. Furthermore, using CNG supports energy security by reducing dependence on imported petroleum products, fostering a more sustainable economy.
