Lagos Gets Federal Government Backing To Quit Citizens Trading Beneath Bridges
Mr. Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Works and Housing, has advocated the adoption of strict legislation to guarantee bridge protection.
As he reiterated that bridges were established for the convenience of vehicular travel, the transfer of products and services, and for the benefit of humanity, not for commercial objectives, he urged Lagos citizens against exploiting under bridges as trading centres.
The Minister made this comment both during the press briefing on the rehabilitation and repairs of the burned part of the Eko Bridge and during the inspection tour of the newly burned Eko bridge (Apongbon and Ijora Olopa section).
The former governor of Lagos emphasised that preventing individuals from trading under bridge required a team effort.

Since the government has passed rules requesting that people stop selling under the bridge, buyers ought to stop supporting vendors in such unsanitary areas as well.
He declared, “Things won’t get done unless you establish strict laws. We are behind you. They are putting their lives at jeopardy as well as the lives of others since under bridges are not places for cooking or living. Illegal lifestyles must be eliminated.
“We are pleading with the Lagos State government to make sure that all trading activities under the state’s bridges are immediately stopped.
“We want the assistance of the local government law enforcement agencies and the ministries of transportation and the environment.”
Dr. Olufemi Hamzat, the deputy governor of Lagos State, also spoke and urged the people to refrain from conducting business under the bridge and live morally in the benefit of others.
He asserts that the State government is prepared to assist in any way that will guarantee prompt adherence by citizens to halt the unauthorised usage of under bridges.
“To ensure the contractor’s seamless operation, the State Government will be on hand to supervise the procedure and offer help as needed.” “We will speak with the proper department to make sure the issue is addressed with regard to persons trading under the bridge,” he said.
