Abuja, Nigeria – The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, has emphasized the urgent need for enhanced ECOWAS regional security cooperation to effectively address security challenges facing the West African sub-region. He made this call on Wednesday during the Gala Night for the 43rd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff in Abuja.

Matawalle highlighted Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to fostering ECOWAS regional security cooperation, stressing that a collaborative approach is essential to counter threats such as terrorism, insurgency, maritime insecurity, and transnational crimes.

Nigeria’s Commitment to ECOWAS Regional Security Cooperation

Reaffirming Nigeria’s dedication to regional peace and security, Matawalle commended the regional body military chiefs for their dedication to strengthening military collaboration, intelligence sharing, and capacity building.

“Over the years, our region has faced evolving security threats, ranging from terrorism and insurgency to maritime insecurity and transnational crime,” Matawalle stated. “Yet, through our collective resolve and cooperation, we have made significant strides in tackling these threats.”

He emphasized that no single nation can combat these challenges alone, reiterating the importance of continued regional security cooperation in ensuring stability and economic prosperity in West Africa.

ECOWAS Military Chiefs Urged to Strengthen Security Cooperation

The Minister of State for Defence called on ECOWAS defence chiefs to enhance intelligence-sharing mechanisms, joint military operations, and coordinated responses to security threats. According to Matawalle, these strategies are crucial in addressing the complex and evolving security dynamics in the region.

“The effort of our military chiefs is instrumental in ensuring regional security. Their dedication to professionalism and resilience in defending our nations deserves commendation,” he added. “This gathering is a testament to the enduring spirit of partnership that binds us together.”

Matawalle further emphasized that the regional security cooperation should extend beyond military collaboration to include diplomatic engagement, socio-economic development, and infrastructural investments to address the root causes of insecurity.

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, described the meeting as a pivotal moment in the collective pursuit of ECOWAS regional security cooperation and sustainable peace.

Musa urged ECOWAS defence chiefs to leverage this platform to reflect on shared goals and reaffirm their commitment to ensuring lasting stability across West Africa.

With rising threats from terrorist organizations, illegal arms trade, and piracy, Matawalle stressed the need for ECOWAS nations to adopt a proactive and coordinated approach in intelligence sharing and military operations.

Improved Intelligence Gathering: Establishing a centralized intelligence-sharing mechanism to combat cross-border security threats.
Joint Military Exercises: Strengthening regional military training programs to enhance combat readiness.
Strengthened Maritime Security: Boosting surveillance efforts in the Gulf of Guinea to counter piracy and illegal fishing.
Border Security Enhancement: Implementing stricter border control measures to curb the movement of armed groups and illicit trade.
