Northern Patriots Forum Criticizes El-Rufai Over Comments on President Tinubu
Former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has come under intense criticism from the Northern Patriots Forum (NPF) for his recent remarks against President Ahmed Bola Tinubu and his administration.
During an interview on Arise Television on Monday, El-Rufai accused President Tinubu and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, of orchestrating his failed ministerial nomination. He claimed that Tinubu deliberately excluded him from his cabinet and that Ribadu opposed him due to personal political ambitions for the 2031 presidential election.
Northern Patriots Forum Condemns El-Rufai’s Criticism
Reacting to the former governor’s allegations, the Northern Patriots Forum (NPF) issued a strong statement on Wednesday, condemning El-Rufai for what they described as baseless accusations against President Tinubu. The statement, signed by NPF Coordinator Capt. Monday Ishakwu, emphasized that El-Rufai lacked the moral ground to attack the president, given his controversial tenure as Kaduna governor.
The Forum asserted that President Tinubu’s leadership within two years has recorded significant achievements, surpassing El-Rufai’s eight-year tenure in Kaduna State.
While advising El-Rufai to exercise caution in his public statements, the NPF accused him of political irrelevance, stating that his words and actions as Kaduna Governor had made him deeply unpopular both nationally and internationally.
Security Reports Blocked El-Rufai’s Ministerial Nomination
The NPF further disclosed that President Tinubu had initially nominated El-Rufai for a ministerial position and reserved a lucrative portfolio for him. However, multiple security reports from intelligence agencies flagged El-Rufai as a ‘diplomatic liability’ and warned against including him in the federal cabinet.
The statement highlighted several controversial incidents from El-Rufai’s past, including his 2019 threat to European Union election observers, where he warned:
“We are waiting for the person who will come and intervene. They will go back in body bags.”
The NPF believes that President Tinubu would have regretted appointing El-Rufai, given that the Kaduna State House of Assembly recently indicted him for mismanaging N423 billion during his administration. The Forum argued that allowing him into the cabinet would have dented Tinubu’s credibility and anti-corruption stance.
El-Rufai Accused of Jealousy Over Tinubu’s Success
The NPF attributed El-Rufai’s recent attacks to envy and frustration, claiming that the former governor is struggling to accept Tinubu’s political and economic achievements within a short period.
The statement read:
“He blames everyone but himself for his failed ministerial bid. One moment he blames the Kaduna State Governor, then the NSA, then Senator Shehu Sani, and now President Tinubu. It is an unhealthy obsession.”
The Forum further noted that El-Rufai’s poor governance record, alleged human rights violations, and extreme rhetoric have significantly damaged his political relevance.
Allegations of Human Rights Violations and Religious Intolerance
The NPF cited additional reasons why security agencies deemed El-Rufai unfit for a ministerial position, including:
- His alleged role in the 2015 Zaria Shiite Massacre, which resulted in the deaths of 438 civilians.
- Accusations of financing violent herdsmen, who were responsible for numerous attacks in Southern Kaduna.
- Derogatory remarks about religious figures, including his 2019 statement that even if he brought the Pope, Christians would never vote for him.
- Religious intolerance, which made him a polarizing figure within and outside Nigeria.
Conclusion
The Northern Patriots Forum urged El-Rufai to reflect on his political mistakes rather than blaming others for his setbacks. They called on him to stop making divisive statements that could further tarnish his reputation.

“El-Rufai should learn that leadership is about service, not personal ambition. President Tinubu is focused on governance and national progress, not political distractions.”
With President Tinubu’s administration gaining momentum through economic and security reforms, the Forum advised El-Rufai to redirect his energy toward self-reflection rather than political attacks.
