Nigeria 2023 Elections: European Union Expresses Concern Over Security Situation
The security situation in Nigeria has drawn the attention of the European Union (EU), which warned that if it were not promptly resolved, it may interfere with the upcoming general elections.
The organisation also considered whether the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System would be effective across the nation, particularly in rural areas.
During a seminar in Abuja to assess possible security vulnerabilities that could affect the conduct and credibility of the elections, Rudolf Elbling, Team Leader of the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Phase Two Programme, made the comments.
EU said: “For a country the size of Nigeria, elections always have the potential to cause unrest and instability, and that is a very dangerous thing not only for Nigeria and Nigerians but for the entire world,”
”Therefore, everyone is concerned about the insecurity issue that has existed for the past year or two. All Nigerians are concerned about it because of how things have changed. There is a great chance that this will affect the elections since you can’t move around as much,” EU said.

EU called the improvements made to the electoral process by INEC “very considerable.”
The EU did, however, warn that the “fundamental problem” of insecurity might preclude INEC from holding elections in all areas of the nation.
“This would have a lot of legal issues for the entire procedure that might derail the process,” the EU official said. There are a lot of potential legal repercussions, which would then have a lot of political repercussions and a lot of ability to scuttle the election. Of course, logistics are also and always a problem.
EU added, ”And I worry that this insecurity will only exacerbate the situation and make things more difficult. Will electoral technology hold up as well? Although the BVAS is a very promising product, will it function everywhere?
Although they performed admirably in the Ekiti and Osun elections, “we also have the INEC Results Viewing Portal; all these types of things are what we are really looking forward to. However, the extraordinarily hostile political and security environments raise the question of how they will impact the legitimacy and acceptance of elections.”
