In response to the escalating Israel-Hezbollah conflict, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced preparations to evacuate its citizens residing in Lebanon. The announcement was made by Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued on Friday from Abuja.

  •  Ensuring the Safety of Nigerian Nationals

The Nigerian government has acknowledged the deteriorating security situation in Lebanon, prompting immediate action to safeguard its citizens. Amb. Abu-Obe stated, “Further to the deteriorating situation in Lebanon over the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, the government has commenced preparations for the evacuation of Nigerians in Lebanon back to Nigeria.”

To ensure the protection of Nigerian nationals, the government has implemented various safety measures, including regular advisories from the Nigerian Embassy in Lebanon. These advisories provide crucial safety instructions and updates regarding the ongoing conflict.

  • Voluntary Evacuation and Safe Relocation

In August, the Nigerian Embassy recommended that citizens strongly consider voluntary evacuation while commercial flight options remained accessible. Additionally, the government has facilitated the relocation of Nigerians from southern Lebanon to safer areas, including Beirut, in collaboration with community leaders.

  • No Reported Loss of Nigerian Lives

Amb. Abu-Obe emphasized that, as of now, no Nigerian lives have been lost since the onset of the conflict. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reassured citizens of the government’s commitment to their safety, stating, “The ministry wishes to reassure Nigerians that the Federal Government is engaging with relevant stakeholders and remains committed to the protection and safety of Nigerian nationals.”

As the situation in Lebanon continues to unfold, the Federal Government’s proactive measures to evacuate its citizens highlight its dedication to ensuring their safety. Nigerians living in Lebanon are encouraged to stay informed and follow the guidance of the Embassy as evacuation preparations progress.
