Nigeria Responds to Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Concerns
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced heightened surveillance for passengers arriving from China, following a surge of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in the Asian country.
Dr. John Oladejo, Director of Special Duties at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), stated that measures, including quarantine protocols, would be activated to mitigate potential risks.
HMPV: What You Need to Know
HMPV is a respiratory virus causing flu-like symptoms, with children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals being most vulnerable. Though milder than COVID-19, the virus has sparked concerns due to its rapid spread in northern China.
Experts emphasize the importance of continuous surveillance to detect and contain cases early.

Dr. Moses Adewumi of the University of Ibadan stressed, “Surveillance should be an ongoing process, not just during crises.”
