As Nigeria’s Labour Union Set for February 4 Protest Against 50% Telecom Tariff Increase
The Federal Government has summoned the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its civil society allies for an emergency meeting today to prevent a nationwide protest scheduled for February 4, 2025. The protest is against the recently approved 50% hike in telecommunications tariffs and the controversial N8 billion budget for electricity bill sensitization.
Government’s Last-Minute Attempt to Halt Protest
According to a source from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the meeting, set for 5 PM, aims to engage labour leaders in a dialogue on pressing national issues affecting Nigerian workers.
“The meeting will address the NLC’s concerns over the federal government’s approval of a 50% telecom tariff hike, which has sparked significant opposition,” the source stated.
NLC’s Strong Opposition to Tariff Hike
Despite the government’s invitation, sources within the NLC confirmed that while leaders would attend the meeting, they remain firm in their stance against the tariff increase.
NLC has been mobilizing its affiliate unions and state councils for a nationwide peaceful protest. In a letter dated January 30, 2025, NLC General Secretary, Emma Ugboaja, urged all members to ensure total participation.
Nationwide Protest Plan
The protest is set to commence at 7:00 AM on February 4, 2025, in state capitals and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Protesters are expected to march to the nearest NCC offices or state Houses of Assembly to present their petitions.
“We must take a stand against policies that further burden Nigerian workers and favor corporate elites,” the letter emphasized.
