French Embassy Lauds YABATECH’s Plastogas Hub Project for Innovation in Waste-to-Energy Conversion

The French Embassy in Nigeria has praised Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) for its outstanding research achievements on the Plastogas Hub project, an innovative waste-to-energy initiative that converts plastic waste into gas.

During an inspection of the research project, the Embassy’s Science and Higher Education Attaché, Mr. Sébastien Bede, and the Project Coordinator, Mrs. Adjua Kamara, expressed their admiration for the college’s dedication, creativity, and technical ingenuity in executing the project.

Bede lauded YABATECH researchers for setting a new standard in how tertiary institutions can contribute to environmental sustainability through research and innovation.

“The Plastogas Hub project is a shining example of how academic institutions can lead the way in tackling plastic pollution while fostering clean energy solutions,” Bede remarked.

The Plastogas Hub project, funded through the French Embassy Fund (FEF), aims to address Nigeria’s plastic pollution crisis while promoting clean energy solutions and economic opportunities. According to Bede, the initiative aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and fosters the empowerment of students to become environmental stewards.

Beyond financial support, the French Government is keen on strengthening academic collaboration and research-driven innovation between Nigeria and France. The project, he added, is a testament to the strong partnership between both nations in advancing science and technology.

Recognition for the Plastogas Hub Research Team

Bede commended the Plastogas Hub research team for their resilience, dedication, and commitment to the success of the project. He emphasized that their work proves that Nigerian institutions have the capacity to deliver world-class innovations in sustainable energy and waste management.

“The visit has reinforced our confidence in YABATECH as a hub for technological advancement and environmental sustainability,” he stated.

Expanding Research Opportunities and International Collaboration

Beyond the immediate impact of the Plastogas Hub project, the French Embassy delegation encouraged YABATECH’s staff and students to explore opportunities for further studies and research collaborations with French universities.

Bede highlighted that French institutions are open to hosting Nigerian students and researchers for undergraduate and postgraduate programs, particularly in areas related to sustainability, energy, and environmental management. He urged YABATECH to leverage these international partnerships to expand its research capacity.

In his remarks, the Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, represented by Deputy Rector Academics, Dr. Engr Ismail Badmus, expressed gratitude to the French Embassy Government for its support and recognition.

He reaffirmed YABATECH’s commitment to ensuring the success of the Plastogas Hub project and maximizing its long-term benefits.

Nigeria generates thousands of tonnes of plastic waste annually, much of which ends up in landfills, drains, and oceans, causing severe environmental hazards. The Plastogas Hub project seeks to curb this menace by converting plastic waste into gas, providing an alternative energy source for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

The delegation from the French Embassy visited YABATECH to assess the progress of the project and encourage further innovation in waste-to-energy conversion.
