Governor Okpebholo Launches Massive School Renovation to Mark 100 Days in Office

100 Schools Undergoing Reconstruction Across the State
Benin City, Edo State— In a bid to make an immediate impact, Governor Monday Okpebholo has initiated the renovation and reconstruction of 100 schools across Edo State as part of his administration’s commitment to education.
State Officials Inspect Progress on School Upgrades
Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mrs. Onomen Brigg, revealed this during an inspection tour of school facilities alongside Mrs. Angela Okpamen, a board member representing Edo South.
Mrs. Brigg emphasized the need for community involvement in protecting newly upgraded school facilities from vandalism. She highlighted that Governor Okpebholo’s plan includes constructing fences and security posts in all renovated schools to enhance safety.
Schools in Oredo and Egor LGAs Among First Beneficiaries
The inspection team visited Ebo Primary School in Iyekhogba, Ore-Oghene Primary School in Oredo LGA, and Evbareke Junior Secondary School, Use Junior Secondary School, and Okhekhugbo Primary School in Egor LGA.
Brigg assured that the renovation projects—including classroom repairs, furniture provision, and security enhancements—will be completed within one to three weeks.
Addressing Overcrowding and Lack of Furniture
She acknowledged that many schools face severe overcrowding and a lack of proper furniture, with some classrooms accommodating up to 200 students while others sit on the floor. The government’s intervention aims to create a more conducive learning environment by ensuring all schools have adequate facilities.
Call for Community Support in Safeguarding School Infrastructure
Brigg urged parents, teachers, and local communities to help prevent theft and vandalism, stressing that the ultimate beneficiaries of the upgrades are the students.
“Security is a major issue. We need to sensitize communities so they can help protect these properties. If vandalism continues, it is the children who will suffer,” she said.
She reaffirmed that Governor Okpebholo’s administration remains committed to transforming the education sector, with more projects planned across Edo Central and Edo North in the coming weeks.
