In order for Nnamdi Kanu, the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, to get access to the doctors of his choosing, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, his legal counsel has urged that he be immediately and unconditionally released from the Department of State Services’ custody.
The demand was based on Kanu’s purported terrible symptoms, which his gastro intestinal disorder was said to have caused.
Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Kanu’s principal attorney, claimed in a statement released on Friday in Abuja that the arrested IPOB leader’s ill health had prevented him from eating for the previous 48 hours.
Ejiofor, who made the announcement following a further regular visit to Kanu while he was being held by the Department of the State Service in Abuja, said that all signs pointed to the security agency having no facility to cope with the health challenges of his client.
The court-ordered routine visit to our client, Nnamdi Kanu, was conducted today at the Department of State Services’ headquarters in Abuja, where Kanu has been kept in solitary confinement for more than 14 months, according to the statement.
Ifeanyi Ejiofor said: “The purpose of today’s visit was to satisfy our curiosity about the DSS’s compliance with giving Kanu the necessary medical care to address his failing health.
“Unfortunately, we made the shocking discovery that the DSS immediately turned to a local chemist store to obtain subpar medications to be administered on Kanu, despite the alarm raised on Monday, calling for the intervention of responsible foreign governments and institutions regarding the DSS’s flagrant disobedience of court orders, particularly in denying Kanu access to his personal medical doctor and medication.’
Ifeanyi Ejiofor continued: ”We are forced to publicly implore the DSS to let us have Kanu back unconditionally or, better yet, to let us buy the prescribed drugs for Kanu while he is still in their custody, as it is now clear that the DSS lacks the facility, capacity, and/or resources to manage his deteriorating health condition. ”May we also take this opportunity to tell the world that Kanu hasn’t eaten anything in the last 48 hours because of the agonising pains caused by his gastro intestinal disease, for which the DSS has purposefully refused to provide the recommended medical assistance.
“After this event, we are now certain that the Federal Government is ostensibly scared of the expected favourable result of the Court of Appeal’s ruling.”
Ifeanyi Ejiofor added: ”Because of this, they are doing everything in their power to torture Kanu severely and subject him to other cruel and inhumane punishment until he is ultimately allowed to return to freedom.
”However, we assure UmuChineke that our defence team, under the direction of Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), is unwavering in all the steps we are taking to fix this anomaly and stop treating Kanu in a humiliating manner.”
