IGP Kayode Egbetokun Issues Strong Warning Against Misconduct and Corruption within the Nigeria Police Force
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has raised serious concerns over alarming reports of extortion and misconduct by certain members of the Nigeria Police Force. His statements came during a recent address to senior police officers at the IGP’s Conference, held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan International Peacekeeping Hall in Abuja.
Call for Integrity and Professionalism
Egbetokun emphasized the necessity for police officers to adhere to the highest standards of professional conduct. “We must ensure that our officers uphold their duties with integrity and professionalism. Any officer found guilty of misconduct will face the full wrath of the law,” he asserted during the conference attended by Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, and other senior officers.
Strengthening Oversight Mechanisms
In an effort to combat unethical practices within the force, the IGP has directed specialized units, including the IGP X-Squad, the Monitoring Unit, and the Complaint Response Unit, to enhance their oversight functions. He stated that routine checks would be conducted on officers nationwide, with disciplinary actions promised for those found guilty of misconduct.
“Supervisory officers who fail in their duties will also be held accountable,” Egbetokun warned, underscoring the importance of responsibility at all levels of the police hierarchy.
Zero Tolerance for Corruption
Egbetokun issued a clear and stern warning to officers engaging in extortion, particularly those misusing the names of senior officers, including his own, to deceive and exploit unsuspecting citizens. “Let me make this clear: any officer caught using my name or the name of any senior officer to extort the public will face severe consequences. The leadership of the Nigeria Police Force will not tolerate any form of corruption,” he declared.
Public Vigilance and Cooperation
In his address, the IGP also called on the public to be vigilant and report any instances of exploitation or fraudulent activities. He highlighted the critical role of citizens in ensuring a corruption-free police force, stating, “The public plays a critical role in policing. We need your support to identify and report officers who are involved in unethical practices.”
