Enhancing Food Self-Sufficiency in Nigeria
Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has unveiled a significant subsidy initiative designed to support local wheat farmers, with the state government covering 75% of agricultural input costs. This strategic move aims to enhance wheat production and contribute to food self-sufficiency across Nigeria.
Commitment to Expanding Wheat Cultivation
In a recent exclusive interview following the conclusion of the West and Central Africa Development Network Wheat second regional summit in Abuja, Governor Namadi reaffirmed the state’s dedication to increasing wheat farming. He revealed that, in collaboration with the African Development Bank and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Nigeria has been allocated 120,000 hectares for wheat cultivation, with Jigawa State designated 40,000 hectares.
Significant Growth in Wheat Farming Areas
The governor highlighted the success of additional partnerships with the Flour Milling Association of Nigeria, resulting in the cultivation of an extra 5,000 hectares. He noted that even farmers not participating in the subsidy program have cultivated 10 hectares, bringing the total area dedicated to wheat farming in the state to 55,000 hectares.
Financial Relief for Farmers
Governor Namadi emphasized the financial relief provided by the subsidy program, which significantly reduces the cost burden on farmers. With the federal government contributing a 50% subsidy, the state has stepped in to cover 75% of the remaining costs, allowing farmers to contribute just 25%. This initiative has encouraged more individuals to engage in wheat production, yielding positive results for local agriculture.
Ambitious Goals for Future Production
Looking ahead, Governor Namadi expressed aspirations to scale up wheat production to 100,000 hectares within the year. He plans to enhance collaboration with the Flour Milling Association to expand the land allocated for wheat cultivation, reinforcing the state’s commitment to agricultural growth.
Improving Seed Availability and Local Involvement
In addition to the subsidy program, the governor is focused on improving seed availability. The Ministry of Agriculture has imported seeds from Mexico while also promoting local seed production. By involving local youth in seed production, the state aims to create a thriving agricultural sector, with Governor Namadi noting that seed production can be highly profitable due to premium pricing.

Through these initiatives, Jigawa State is positioning itself as a leader in wheat production, striving for food self-sufficiency and enhancing the local agricultural landscape. Governor Namadi’s proactive approach reflects a commitment to fostering a robust farming community and ensuring sustainable agricultural development in the region.
