LAGOS, NIGERIA – The Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to hold an emergency meeting today (Monday) at the Lagos House Marina, the official residence of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to address the ongoing leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Crucial GAC Meeting Amid Political Turmoil
The GAC, which serves as the apex decision-making body of the Lagos APC, is chaired by Pa Tajudeen Olusi, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its lifetime patron. This meeting marks the second emergency gathering in two weeks, reflecting the intensity of the crisis that has divided party stakeholders.
Sanwo-Olu to Lead Exco Meeting on the Crisis
Simultaneously, Governor Sanwo-Olu is expected to chair the weekly Executive Council meeting, where discussions will also focus on resolving the leadership dispute in the legislative arm of government. The goal is to find a lasting and amicable solution to the controversy surrounding the recent removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Background: The Ousting of Mudashiru Obasa
On January 13, 2025, 32 out of 40 Assembly members voted in absentia to remove Obasa as Speaker, citing allegations of financial misappropriation, misconduct, and high-handedness. His former deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was immediately installed as the new Speaker. This unprecedented move sparked mixed reactions among GAC members, party loyalists, and the public.
GAC Members Divided Over Obasa’s Removal
The leadership shakeup has exposed deep divisions within the GAC:
- Muraina Taiwo, a GAC member from Isolo Constituency, criticized the Assembly for reconvening during recess to remove Obasa.
- Musiliu Obanikoro and Senator Anthony Adefuye expressed opposing views, with Adefuye labeling Obasa’s removal as illegal while Obanikoro dismissed such claims as reckless.
- GAC Secretary Mutiu Are attempted to downplay the crisis, calling it a “family affair” that would be resolved internally.
Next Steps: Can APC Resolve the Crisis?
Over the weekend, reports emerged that GAC leaders have intensified efforts to mediate the dispute and prevent further division within the party. The outcome of today’s meeting is expected to shape the next phase of the leadership battle in Lagos politics.
