NAFDAC Warns Bakers and Table Water Producers in Nasarawa State Against Unwholesome Practices

Regulatory Agency Emphasizes Quality Standards to Safeguard Public Health
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a strong warning to bakers and table water producers in Nasarawa State, urging them to avoid unwholesome practices or face potential sanctions. This announcement was made by Francis Ononiwu, the North-Central Director of NAFDAC, during a stakeholders’ engagement with Master Bakers and the Association of Table Water Producers of Nigeria on Friday in Lafia.
Importance of Quality Assurance
During the engagement, Ononiwu emphasized the critical role of food and water in the lives of citizens, stating that NAFDAC is committed to ensuring that the public consumes only healthy products. He highlighted the significance of bread as a staple food for many households in Nigeria, underscoring the need to uphold quality standards in its production.
“We are reminding you to maintain the quality of products presented during routine inspections,” he said. “Adherence to our regulations and operational guidelines is essential, from the sourcing of raw materials to the packaging stage.”
Consequences for Non-Compliance
Ononiwu made it clear that any compromise in the production process could result in substandard products. He reiterated NAFDAC’s commitment to protecting public health, stating, “Every manufacturer of regulated products must renew their registration within the stipulated period or face sanctions.”
The agency plans to conduct routine inspections, and any failure to comply with registration or operational guidelines could lead to severe consequences, including the shutdown of facilities or prosecution of violators.
A Collaborative Approach to Regulation
Matthew Olawale, the Nasarawa State Coordinator of NAFDAC, emphasized that the forum serves as a valuable platform for stakeholders to express their challenges and improve their relationship with the regulatory body. He urged bakers and table water producers to ensure their registration documents are valid and to avoid deliberately violating agency guidelines.
Positive Feedback from Stakeholders
Alfred Alogala, the former Chairman of the Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP) in the state, praised NAFDAC for its initiative and expressed optimism that it would assist producers in maintaining high standards. He encouraged members to adhere to best practices in the production of water and food products to prevent the spread of infections and diseases among consumers.
By reinforcing these quality standards and regulatory measures, NAFDAC aims to ensure that the health and safety of the public are prioritized in the food and beverage industry in Nasarawa State.
