NBC Apologizes for EFCC Incursion at Urban Radio Station in Enugu

National Broadcasting Commission Responds to Controversial Arrest During Live Broadcast

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a formal apology to the broadcast industry, the people of Enugu State, and the listening public following the recent incursion of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives into Urban Radio 94.5FM during a live show.

Incident Overview

The apology was announced in a statement by Mrs. Susan Obi, Director of Public Affairs at NBC, on Monday in Abuja. The incident occurred on October 14, when EFCC operatives interrupted the live radio program titled ‘PrimeTime’ to arrest the show’s presenter, Favour Ekoh.

Concerns Over Professional Ethics

In the statement, Obi expressed the Commission’s dismay regarding the invasion, emphasizing that the approach taken by the EFCC constituted a violation of professional broadcasting ethics, particularly during a live broadcast. She stated, “The approach for which the arrest was carried out is improper. This action is regrettable, considering the impact of the broadcast media on society.”

The NBC further criticized the EFCC’s method of intervention, noting that it could have led to public disorder, panic, and hysteria among the audience.

Acknowledgment of EFCC’s Role

While acknowledging the EFCC’s important role in combating financial crimes, the NBC extended heartfelt apologies to the listening public, residents of Enugu State, and the entire broadcast industry for the incident. Obi urged the general public to remain law-abiding as the legal process unfolds and called on media professionals to uphold ethical standards in their work.

Background on the Arrest

Favour Ekoh was arrested in connection with an alleged N700 million Ponzi scheme, accused of deceiving unsuspecting investors into a fraudulent investment operation. The circumstances surrounding her arrest have raised significant concerns regarding the treatment of media professionals and the implications of law enforcement actions on live broadcasts.

Conclusion

The NBC’s response highlights the delicate balance between law enforcement activities and the freedom of the press. As discussions continue regarding the incident, there are calls for dialogue between regulatory bodies and law enforcement agencies to ensure that the rights of broadcasters are protected while upholding the law.
