Denmark Tops the List as the Least Corrupt Country

Abuja, Nigeria – Transparency International (TI) has ranked Nigeria as the 36th most corrupt country in the world in its 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), released on Tuesday.

Nigeria shares the same ranking with Uganda, Mexico, Madagascar, Iraq, and Cameroon, each scoring 26 points on the corruption index.

Denmark, Finland, and Singapore Lead as Least Corrupt Nations

The CPI ranks 180 countries based on perceived levels of public sector corruption, scoring from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).

• Denmark topped the list with 90 points, making it the least corrupt country.
• Finland followed closely with 88 points, while
• Singapore ranked third with 84 points.

No African country made the top 10 least corrupt nations, which remained dominated by European countries. However, Cape Verde ranked as the least corrupt country in Africa, securing 62 points and placing 35th globally.

South Sudan, Somalia, and Venezuela Rank as the Most Corrupt

At the bottom of the rankings, South Sudan, Somalia, and Venezuela were named the most corrupt countries in 2024, highlighting serious governance challenges in these nations.

Global Corruption Trends and Concerns

Transparency International’s Chair, Francois Valeria, noted that corruption remains a major global issue but pointed out some positive progress:

• 32 countries have significantly reduced corruption levels since 2012.
• However, 148 countries have either remained stagnant or become worse.
• The global average score remains at 43, showing little improvement over the years.
• More than two-thirds of countries still score below 50, meaning billions of people live in places where corruption undermines human rights and governance.

Valeria also warned that corruption poses a serious threat to climate action, hindering progress in both reducing emissions and adapting to climate change.

Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Efforts: A Call for Action

Nigeria’s low ranking highlights ongoing governance and accountability challenges, despite various anti-corruption initiatives. Experts stress the need for stronger enforcement of anti-corruption laws, greater transparency, and more independent institutions to tackle corruption effectively.
