JUHI-2: A Game-Changer for the Aviation Sector
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced the launch of the Joint User Hydrant Installation 2 (JUHI-2), the largest airside jet fuel depot in Nigeria, with a remarkable storage capacity of 150 million litres of Jet A1 fuel. This facility is poised to enhance the efficiency of the aviation sector by delivering a minimum of 150 million litres of aviation turbine kerosene (ATK) to airlines each month, representing 20% of the nation’s annual sales volume.
Collaborative Effort by Leading Companies
JUHI-2 is a result of a collaborative initiative involving several prominent companies, including Eterna Plc, Masters Energy Oil & Gas, Techno Oil & Gas, Rahamaniyya Oil & Gas, Ibafon Oil, Quest Oil Group, and First Deep Water Limited. The joint venture aims to strengthen Nigeria’s energy security and support the aviation ecosystem.
Addressing Flight Delays and Cancellations
At the commissioning ceremony held at the JUHI-2 premises in Ikeja, Lagos, Keyamo emphasized the strategic importance of the facility, stating that it would significantly reduce flight delays and cancellations often caused by a shortage of Jet A1 fuel. He remarked, “This facility is strategic and supportive to the aviation ecosystem in Nigeria.”
Keyamo also highlighted that the depot’s proximity to both local and international airports aligns with global requirements for aviation fuel supply facilities. He underscored its importance for hajj operations, where fuel availability is critical for approved airport functionality.
Recent Achievements in Nigeria’s Aviation Sector
The Minister shared noteworthy progress in the aviation sector, announcing that Nigeria has been removed from the watchlist of non-compliant countries. The country has achieved a 75.5% compliance rate in aircraft financing, up from 70.5%, enabling Nigerian airlines to access dry leases for aircraft worldwide.
Enhancing Energy Security and Operational Efficiency
Patience Dappa, Chairman of JUHI-2 Limited, elaborated on the depot’s role in strengthening Nigeria’s energy security and ensuring a reliable jet fuel supply chain. She stated, “This facility will ensure rapid response times and faster refuelling processes, enhancing the competitiveness of airports and airlines.”
Dappa detailed the state-of-the-art features of JUHI-2, which include advanced filtration systems, a jet fuel discharge system capable of loading four fuel trucks simultaneously, a modern laboratory, and cutting-edge fire prevention measures. She emphasized that JUHI-2 is designed to provide a steady and reliable supply of jet fuel to Murtala Muhammed International Airport and nearby airbases.
