Presidential Announcement Confirms Death of Chief of Army Staff
On Wednesday, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, announced the passing of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja. General Lagbaja, aged 56, passed away on Tuesday night after battling an illness. The announcement was made on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
Presidential Statement and Condolences
In a statement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed his deep condolences, honoring Lt. General Lagbaja’s legacy in the Nigerian Armed Forces. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, regrets to announce the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, at age 56,” Onanuga relayed on behalf of the President.
President Tinubu’s message also extended heartfelt condolences to Lt. General Lagbaja’s family and colleagues within the Nigerian Armed Forces. He expressed wishes for General Lagbaja’s eternal peace and acknowledged his unwavering service to Nigeria.
A Distinguished Military Career and Dedication to National Security
Lt. General Lagbaja was born on February 28, 1968, and began his military journey at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992, as part of the 39th Regular Course.
Throughout his career, General Lagbaja was known for his exceptional leadership. He held pivotal roles, serving as a platoon commander in both the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion. His commitment to Nigeria’s security led him to be actively involved in critical internal security operations, including:
- Operation ZAKI in Benue State
- Operation Lafiya Dole in Borno State
- Operation Udoka in Southeast Nigeria
- Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States
Academic Excellence and Strategic Military Leadership
In addition to his extensive field experience, Lt. General Lagbaja was an alumnus of the U.S. Army War College, where he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies. His dedication to professional growth and excellence in military leadership was evident throughout his service.
