Six Soldiers Killed in ISWAP and Boko Haram Attack on Sabon Gari Village
In a major counter-terrorism operation, the Nigerian military reported the deaths of over 34 terrorists during a confrontation in Sabon Gari village, Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State. The clash occurred on January 4, 2025, following an attempted ambush by insurgents from the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram.
The insurgents, heavily armed with motorcycles and gun trucks, launched an attack against military troops in what was described as retaliation for recent offensives that eliminated several of their commanders and combatants.
Swift Military Response Saves the Day
According to Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, the insurgents’ ambush on a returning patrol team was met with strong resistance. Reinforcements, including members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), vigilante groups, and hybrid forces, promptly arrived to counter the attackers.
Adding to the ground forces’ efforts, the air component of Operation HADIN KAI carried out precision airstrikes on the fleeing insurgents, inflicting significant losses.
Significant Recovery Made from the Operation
During the operation, the Nigerian military recovered:
- 23 AK-47 rifles
- Over 200 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition
- Other combat gear used by the insurgents
Despite the success, the military suffered casualties, with six personnel killed in action.

“The names of the deceased personnel will remain confidential until their families have been properly notified,” Major General Buba stated. He called for respect and sensitivity towards the affected families during this challenging time.

Reaffirming the Nigerian Armed Forces’ resolve, Major General Buba emphasized their unwavering dedication to eradicating insurgency and terrorism in the country. “Our troops remain focused on ensuring peace and security for all Nigerians,” he added.
