ABUJA – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially appointed Shamsedeen Babatunde Ogunjimi as the new Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), following a competitive selection process aimed at ensuring transparency, efficiency, and merit-based recruitment.

The appointment was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday, March 5, 2025, by the presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, His appointment will take effect from March 7, 2025, the same day the current Accountant General, Oluwatoyin Madehin, is set to retire.

Ogunjimi’s Appointment Process and Qualifications

The statement emphasized that the new accountant general selection followed a rigorous and merit-based evaluation conducted by a high-level selection committee. The process involved three key assessment stages:

  1. A written examination to test financial management and policy knowledge.

Ogunjimi, 57, was initially named as the successor to Madehin in December 2024, and after excelling in all three assessment stages, he emerged as the top candidate.

Educational Background and Professional Credentials

Shamsedeen Babatunde Ogunjimi is a seasoned financial expert with extensive experience in public accounting and fiscal management. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1990 and later earned a Master’s degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Lagos.

His professional affiliations include:

  • Fellow, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN)
  • Fellow, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN)

Over the years, Ogunjimi has held various leadership roles within the Federal Civil Service, where he played critical roles in budgetary planning, financial policy implementation, and revenue management.
