Sanwo-Olu Set To Deploy Forensic Science Combat Crimes

The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo has said the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration would henceforth deploy forensic science by law enforcement to combat crime in the state.

Onigbanjo in a statement on Sunday said, the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, said this during his address at the start of the sixth edition of the Lagos Forensic Symposium, which was organised by the Ministry of Justice in collaboration with the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre.

Onigbanjo emphasised the importance of forensic science to the criminal justice system by allowing for the rapid identification and conviction of criminals as well as the exoneration of innocent people.

“With ever-changing crime patterns, the Lagos State Government is committed to scaling up its penchant for innovation to make Lagos a safer place to live, work and visit,” Onigbanjo said.

Onigbanjo added: “In recognition of the critical role of forensic analysis in the fight against crime, the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre was established to support investigations conducted by the Nigeria Police and other law enforcement agencies.”

“The Forensic Centre was established in September 2017, and the Lagos State Forensic Biology/DNA unit, as well as the DNA Database and Matching system, were accredited by ISO 17025:2017 in February 2019.

“This symposium will present current information on how forensic science is used in criminal investigations, law enforcement, mass fatalities, sexual assault, wildlife trafficking, and other related matters in Lagos State.”
