Early Childhood Education Will Be improved Through UBEC, Says FG

In order to help states develop early childhood programmes, the minister of state for education, Nanah Opiah has stated that Universal Basic Education will “do everything humanly feasible.”

In addition to setting the minimal requirements for basic education in Nigeria, UBEC, an organisation of the Federal Government under the Federal Ministry of Education, Opiah charged with developing and coordinating all programmes linked to the Universal Basic Education programme.

The minister of state for education, Nanah Opiah, highlighted some of the barriers to early education in a statement made available to our correspondent to announce the launch of the national campaign to raise awareness of out-of-school children across the nation.

Opiah said, “The Federal Government through the instrumentality of the Universal Basic Education is doing everything humanly possible to assist the states on the issue of early childhood education.

”Extreme poverty, ignorance, and lack of access to education are some of the barriers preventing our kids from receiving an early education.”

The Minister stated that the goal of the sensitization is “to ensure massive enrollment of children in basic and primary schools and should be taken seriously by all stakeholders,”

Opiah added that it is a moral and legal duty, the fulfilment of which will ensure the future of the kids and, by necessary implication, the country.

Citing the example of Bayelsa State, the Opiah commended the state’s successive administrations for the special attention paid to education, which included the declaration of an emergency in the state’s education sector, the introduction of a free education policy at the primary and secondary levels, and the creation of the enrollment drive committee, all of which have resulted in a significant increase in student enrollment in the state’s schools.

According to the Opiah, parents in Bayelsa State no longer have any justification for keeping their kids home from school.
