Police Restricts Movements On February 25 Over General Elections

The Yobe State Police Command has announced that movement will be restricted on February 25th, 2023.

This was revealed in a statement issued on Monday by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim.

The restriction, except for those on essential services, will be enforced from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on February 25, 2023, according to the statement, while urging voters to return to their respective homes after casting their ballots and await the announcement of election results.

“It should be noted that the Electoral Act exempts from participation in the conduct of general elections quasi-security outfits such as: Vigilante/Hunters groups; YOROTA; Man ‘O’ War; Boys Scout; Boys Brigade; voluntary organisations, as well as other local security groups.”

“Any person(s) found flouting the electoral laws or going about with arms is liable to be apprehended and prosecuted”, the command warned.

The Commissioner of Police, Haruna G. Garba, while demonstrating his preparedness towards a hitch-free and credible general elections, tasked all police personnel and other law enforcement agencies deployed for the national assignment to respect human rights, extant laws, rules and regulations guiding the conduct of the exercise.

The Police Commissioner also enjoined the good people of Yobe State to cooperate with security personnel and render support to ensure the success of the exercise in the state.

“Accordingly, they are advised to discharge their civic responsibility of reporting any untoward activity that might disrupt the peaceful conduct of the general elections”, he advised.
