Oyo Set Aside Amotekun, Seeks US Help On Security
The Oyo State Government on Monday requested the assistance of the United States to combat the security threats in Nigeria, particularly in the state.
While receiving the new US Consul-General, Williams Stevens, at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, the state deputy governor, Adebayo Lawal, appealed for help on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde.
Lawal, who noted that insecurity was growing endemic in Nigeria, stated that Oyo State would welcome whatever technology needed to address the threat.
“At first, we thought we could localise this security concern, but it has evolved into a hydra-headed phenomenon.”
“If you want to help, be deliberate, and we will encourage you to help and partner with the Oyo State Government in the area of security,” he stated.
“We recognise security is critical, and we have truly committed a bigger percentage of resources into security development,” Lawal said of measures done thus far to combat vulnerability.
“Since the beginning of this government, we have put in place an organisation named ‘Amotekun’ to supplement the work of our traditional security organisations – police, the Department of State Security, and others of a national nature.”
“Amotekun has been domesticated, localised, and enters into the nooks and crannies of our communities to safeguard the safety of our ecosystems.”
The deputy governor also stated that the state government desired agricultural and health collaboration with the United States.
Lawal took advantage of the opportunity to praise the United States for its efforts in combating the HIV infection.
According to him, Oyo State has been working hard “to limit the virus’s prevalence.”
Earlier, Stevens stated that his country was ready to improve economic relations and bilateral commerce, as well as collaborate with Oyo State to tackle crime.
Stevens said that the United States was working with other countries to prioritise agriculture, health, and security, among other things. You can read more of such stories at Credible News.
He lauded the state administration’s efforts to improve healthcare services. He went on to say that the state’s HIV prevalence metrics are better than those of other countries.
Stevens stated that the United States would collaborate with Oyo State and the Federal Government to combat transnational crime and protect residents’ lives and property.
