Building Collapses and Widespread Damage Reported as Authorities Launch Investigation
The peaceful community of Umuneke Obazu Mbieri in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State was jolted by a devastating explosion early Sunday morning, leaving residents in shock and fear. Eyewitnesses report that a suspected drone was seen hovering over the area moments before the blast.
Eyewitness Accounts of the Incident
According to residents, the incident occurred around 1:10 am, shortly after a drone-like object was spotted flying over Umuneke Obazu Mbieri and nearby communities.
“We were awoken by the sound of a drone hovering above us,” said a resident who requested anonymity. “Just minutes later, we heard a massive explosion that brought down a building and damaged others within a 2-kilometre radius.”
Immediate Response from Local Authorities
Top local government officials, including the Chairman of Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Hon. Ifunanya Nwanegwo, and the Secretary General of Obazu Autonomous Community, Hon. Emeka Nosiri, were among the first responders at the scene.
They urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that the situation was under control and that a thorough investigation would be conducted to uncover the cause of the explosion.
Police Investigation Underway
The Mbieri Police Division, led by DPO Supol Wet Ben, has launched a probe into the explosion. The anti-bomb squad of the Nigeria Police Force is expected to join the investigation, focusing on determining whether the explosion was caused by a bomb, drone attack, or another source.
Community Leaders Call for Action
The President of the Udodiri Family Meeting, Emeka Arimanwa, expressed the community’s concerns and appealed to the government for swift action. “We hope that the government will take immediate steps to ensure our safety and security,” he said.
