The bill for power rotation among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones before the Senate has suffered a setback as the senators on Tuesday during plenary session rejected it.
Senator Patrick Moro, who represents Benue South, introduced the power rotation bill that led to a lot of debate on the floor because it was primarily backed by the majority caucus.
“If there is a law on power rotation in Nigeria, it will help to ameliorate the squabble for power, particularly the Presidency across the various six geo-political zones and also promote unity in the country,” said Senator Moro in the lead debate on the piece of legislation titled, “A Bill for an Act to provide for the Rotation of Power and Other Related Matters therein 2022.”

Bala Na’ Allah, an APC senator who represents Kebbi South, was the first to oppose the motion on the bill, arguing that it should have been presented as a bill seeking to amend pertinent provisions of the Constitution rather than merely requesting legislation from the Senate or, indirectly, the National Assembly.
In his speech, Ovie Omo-Agege (APC, Delta Central), the deputy senate president, also opposed the bill by presenting arguments similar to Bala Na’Allah and many others.
Senator Moro quickly withdrew the bill using Order 42 of the Senate Standing Rules in response to further objections.
