Tinubu Elected as ECOWAS Chairman

President Bola Tinubu has been elected to lead the Economic Community of West African States’ Authority of Heads of State and Government.

At the regional bloc’s 63rd Ordinary Session, which took place on Sunday afternoon in Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau, Tinubu was chosen as chairman.

After accepting the documents from the departing chairman, Umaro Embaló, President of Guinea-Bissau, the Nigerian leader declared, “We will take democracy seriously. Democracy is really demanding, but it is the form of governance.”

One of the heads of state or government from the member nations is chosen rotatory to serve as the ECOWAS Chairmanship for a period of one year.

During 2018 and 2019, the position was held by former President Buhari.

Although the position does not grant administrative authority, the Chairman plays a strategic role in dispute resolution and advocacy. He also works closely with the President of the ECOWAS Commission, who is the executive in charge of managing and carrying out day-to-day ECOWAS policies and decisions.
