Tinubu Holds Second Marathon FEC Meeting to Clear Backlog of Memos

Abuja, Nigeria – Less than 24 hours after presiding over a lengthy Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, President Bola Tinubu has reconvened the council for another session at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, as the government works through a backlog of pending memos.
Why a Second Consecutive FEC Meeting?
The meeting, which began at 1:26 p.m. on Tuesday, follows Monday’s session that spilled over due to an accumulation of unresolved government matters.
According to Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the last FEC meeting was held in December 2023, leaving numerous proposals awaiting approval.
“Since December, we’ve not had any FEC meetings, so many memos have gathered. The President is determined to dispense with all of them,” Idris stated on Monday.

Major Discussions and Approvals
One of the key highlights from Monday’s meeting was the approval of ₦4.8 billion for the Presidential Treatment Programme, aimed at providing 150,000 HIV treatment packs between February and May 2025.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, revealed that the decision was influenced by recent U.S. policy changes affecting Nigeria’s healthcare funding, particularly for HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria programs.
Additionally, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other government agencies were among those presenting critical policy memos for approval.
