Court Releases and Acquits Turaki of N8.3b Fraud
On Thursday, a Federal High Court in Dutse, Jigawa State, discharged and acquitted Senator Ibrahim Saminu Turaki of the N8.3 billion corruption charges brought against him by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission.
Turaki and three other companies had been on trial since May 4, 2007, in an EFCC action on 33 charges.
On July 13, 2007, the EFCC charged Turaki before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal Capital Territory High Court.
The case was relocated to the Federal High Court, Dutse, in 2011, after the former governor Turaki contested the court’s jurisdiction in the FCT division.
In early December, Justice Hassan Dikko was reassigned to take over the matter formerly handled by Justice S. Yahuza before his retirement.

The verdict was issued by Justice Hassan Dikko, the presiding judge, who dismissed all charges levelled against Turaki and discharged all of the accused for lack of diligence in prosecution.
The court further ordered that the first accused person, Saminu Turaki’s travel documents be released to him immediately.
Barrister Saidu Tudunwada, one of the defence attorneys, responded to the verdict by saying that the court found merit in their plea for Turaki’s discharge from the 33 charges.
He went on to say that the verdict served justice and was a triumph for the people.
