Doctors Protest Partial Restoration of Electricity in Hospital Residences
Ibadan, Nigeria – The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has commenced an indefinite strike due to ongoing power outages in parts of the hospital’s residential quarters.
Partial Power Restoration Triggers Strike
The General Secretary of ARD UCH, Dr. Uthman Adedeji, confirmed the strike action on Monday, citing the failure to restore electricity to all residential areas despite recent reconnection efforts.
This follows a previous ultimatum issued by the association, warning that doctors would embark on an indefinite strike if electricity was not fully restored by 4 p.m. on Monday.
“The Emergency General Meeting (EGM) of ARD UCH reviewed the situation and noted that while some residential quarters were reconnected, others remained in darkness,” Adedeji stated.
UCH Management’s Efforts Not Enough, Say Doctors
The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) had reconnected UCH on Wednesday after over 100 days of blackout. However, the doctors argue that the partial restoration does not resolve the issue.
“We acknowledge UCH management’s efforts to address the problem, but a lot still needs to be done to ensure uninterrupted power supply,” Adedeji added.
Strike to Continue Until Full Power is Restored
The ARD emphasized that the strike would continue until electricity is fully restored to all residential quarters, stressing that the welfare of healthcare workers directly impacts service delivery at the hospital.
“We will continue to assess the situation and demand that the necessary measures be taken to prevent further disruptions,” Adedeji concluded.
