Experts Warn of Existential Conflict as Beijing Closes the Gap
The United States and China are locked in a ‘new cold war’ over technology, with Beijing rapidly narrowing the gap, experts at the Munich Security Conference warned over the weekend.
Former U.S. Congressman Mike Gallagher, now head of defense at Palantir Technologies, stated that the competition is not just about economic dominance but an existential battle that threatens the free world.
US Pushes to Maintain Lead in AI & Military Technology
To maintain its edge, Washington is expected to increase investment in AI, robotics, and military technology while tightening export controls on advanced semiconductors.
Gallagher emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating:
“If we don’t act now, we risk losing our technological advantage. China is not just competing; they are determined to control critical technologies and challenge U.S. global leadership.”
AI, Chip Exports & Taiwan: The Key Flashpoints
China’s rapid advancements in AI, chip manufacturing, and autonomous weapons have sparked major concerns in Washington. The U.S. has already imposed strict chip export restrictions to limit Beijing’s military capabilities.
Meanwhile, tensions over Taiwan continue to escalate. Gallagher warned that China could leverage its growing tech power to assert control over the self-governing island, a move that Washington strongly opposes.
Trump vs. Biden: How US Tech Strategy May Shift
Experts predict that if Donald Trump returns to the White House, his administration will prioritize deregulating AI, expanding military tech, and further restricting China’s access to cutting-edge innovations.
Jason Hsu, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, noted:
“Trump could push for aggressive AI and defense tech investments, while tightening chip controls even further—especially on exports through third-party countries.”
China’s Strengths: Low-Cost Tech & AI Breakthroughs
Despite U.S. restrictions, China continues to find ways to innovate, particularly in low-cost technology applications and AI.
Sun Chenghao, head of the U.S.-EU program at Tsinghua University, remarked:
“China is catching up in key fields. DeepSeek AI is just one example, but it signals that Beijing is becoming a serious competitor in AI-driven technologies.”
US & Europe Urged to Strengthen Tech Alliance
To counter China’s rise, European officials called for closer tech collaboration with the U.S. Ekaterina Zaharieva, EU Commissioner for Start-ups and Innovation, stated:
“The only way to win the tech race is for Europe and the U.S. to work together. We remain strong allies in this fight.”
