Wike–Fubara Political Crisis Resolved After Tinubu’s Mediation in Abuja

In a major political breakthrough, the prolonged Wike–Fubara political crisis in Rivers State has officially come to an end following a closed-door peace meeting brokered by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, confirmed the resolution late Thursday night, stating that both parties have reached a final agreement to work together in unity.

“We are members of the same political family… we have all agreed to work together with the governor,” Wike told journalists after the meeting.

🏛️ Months of Political Turmoil in Rivers State

The conflict between Wike–Fubara began shortly after Fubara assumed office in May 2023. It escalated dramatically in October, when lawmakers loyal to Wike initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara.

🤝 Peace Restored: Wike-Fubara Commit to Unity

Describing the outcome as a turning point for the state, Fubara expressed gratitude for what he called a “divine intervention.”

“What we need for the progress of Rivers State is peace… tonight, with the help of Mr. President, peace has returned,” he said.

Fubara also pledged to sustain the fragile unity achieved, assuring supporters that the political acrimony is officially over.

🔍 Background: The Roots of the Wike–Fubara Rift

Although Wike had supported Fubara’s governorship bid, cracks emerged early in the administration. The rift deepened as power dynamics shifted, culminating in direct challenges to Fubara’s authority by state legislators aligned with Wike.

Following a suspicious fire that damaged the State House of Assembly building, Fubara ordered its demolition and moved legislative activities to a temporary site—further escalating tensions.

🛑 Tinubu Declares Emergency Rule in Rivers

As governance in Rivers descended into paralysis, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency on March 18, 2025, suspending Fubara’s executive powers for six months.

He appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd.) as the state’s sole administrator to restore order.

This bold step triggered national debates, but ultimately pressured both Wike-Fubara to return to the negotiation table.

🗣️ Leaders Call for Calm and Reconciliation

Wike urged all political supporters to embrace peace and stop hostilities.

“There’s no more acrimony. I enjoin everybody to work together with everybody,” he said.

Fubara echoed this sentiment, promising to lead with a renewed sense of unity and cooperation.
