WAEC Annual Council Meeting Strengthens Educational Standards in West Africa

The 73rd WAEC Annual Council Meeting has successfully concluded in Monrovia, Liberia, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of standardized examinations and education in West Africa. A key outcome of the meeting was the election of Honourable Amos Armah Fully, Liberia’s Chief Government Nominee on the Council, as the new Vice Chairman for a one-year tenure. He succeeds Mr. Edward Kpakra of Sierra Leone.

The week-long meeting, held from Monday, March 17, to Friday, March 21, 2025, brought together top education stakeholders from the west African examination body member countries, including The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. Discussions focused on enhancing the quality, credibility, and accessibility of the west African examination body examinations across the sub-region.

President Boakai Commends WAEC for 73 Years of Excellence

Declaring the WAEC Annual Council Meeting open, His Excellency Joseph Nyumah Boakai, Sr., President of the Republic of Liberia, applauded WAEC’s 73-year legacy in shaping education in West Africa.

In his keynote address, President Boakai highlighted the west African examination body’s crucial role in standardized examinations, ensuring transparency, fairness, and credibility in student assessments. He emphasized the need for inclusive examination policies, urging the west African examination body to design accessible testing environments for students with disabilities, ensuring equal opportunities for all candidates.

Liberia’s Education Minister Calls for Stronger WAEC Partnerships

Speaking at the event, Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, Liberia’s Minister of Education, reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to collaborating with the west African examination body and other member governments to improve educational standards.

One of the major highlights of the the west African examination body Annual Council Meeting was the recognition of outstanding students from the 2024 WASSCE for School Candidates. The following Ghanaian students received the WAEC International Excellence Award for their exceptional academic performance:

1st Prize: Master David Nii Commey Ankrah
2nd Prize: Master Henschel Tabi Frempong-Manso
3rd Prize: Master Benedict Ofori Debrah

These students emerged as the top performers among 2,455,063 candidates who sat for the 2024 WASSCE across the west African examination body member countries.

Additionally, David Nii Commey Ankrah was honored with the prestigious Augustus Bandele Oyediran Award for the Best Candidate in West Africa, 2024.

WAEC Confers ‘Distinguished Friend of Council’ Award on Mrs. Hawah Sharon Goll-Kotchi

During the event, the west African examination body also recognized the contributions of Mrs. Hawah Sharon Goll-Kotchi, an eminent Liberian citizen, by conferring on her the Distinguished Friend of Council Award for her outstanding efforts in advancing the west African examination body’s mission.

Council Reviews Progress, Discusses Future Educational Strategies

Ghana to Host 74th Annual Council Meeting in 2026

Following the successful 72nd WAEC Annual Council Meeting in Freetown, Sierra Leone (2024), the west african examination bodyhas confirmed that the 74th edition will take place in Ghana in March 2026.

At the closing ceremony, the Chairman of the Council, Prof. Thomas B. R. Yormah, expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Liberia for their warm hospitality and commitment to ensuring the success of the meeting.
