EFCC Gets Convictions and Sentences of 17 Internet Fraudsters
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has disclosed that seventeen internet fraudsters were found guilty of separate one-count charges by Justices Bayo Taiwo, Ladoke Akintola, and Mohammed Owolabi of the State High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, and Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu of the Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta.
The fraudsters were found guilty of the acussation levelled against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibadan Zonal Command and subsequently sentenced by the judges.
According to a statement from EFCC’s head of media and publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, the prison sentences might range from two to nine months of community service and one year in prison.
Uwujaren, said the defendants are Oduola Kunmi Ireola and Igbamidun. Joshua Olamiposi, Ismael Fatai Olatunji, Osundele Oladapo Daniel, Olawale Isaac Adeleke, Olorunyomi Idowu Babatunde, Aneh Ojonimi, Olaide Iyanuoluwa Sadare and Akintola Babatunde Rasheed.
Uwujaren said other convicts are Jamiu Babatunde Salam, Aluko Abayomi Oluwadamilare, Bello Ridwan Ayobami, Maleek Michael Ibrahim, Arasi Oluwaseun Tobi, Ganiu Fawaz Olalekan, Bello Ayoinde Olamilekan and Abiodun Taiwo Kareem.
Meanwhile, to the one-count charge brought against each of them by the EFCC, they all entered a “guilty” plea.
The EFCC media person added that after reviewing the case’s facts, the prosecution’s attorneys, Modupe Akinkoye, Oyelakin Oyediran, Oluwatoyin Owodunni, Musa Galadanchi, Abdulrasheed Suleiman, Mabas Mabur, and Samsudeen Bashir, urged the courts to find the defendants guilty and to impose the appropriate punishment. Osundele was found guilty and given a one-year prison term, while Arasi, Ganiu, and Ibrahim each received a nine-month sentence.
Additionally, the EFCC said Akintola was found guilty and given a sentence of nine months of community service; Oduola, Jamiu, Aluko, and Bello received sentences of six months each; Igbamidun and Kareem received sentences of five months each.
In addition, the EFCC said Adeleke received a punishment of N150,000.00 (One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira), Olorunyomi, Ojonimi, and Sadare received fines of N100,000.00 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) each, and Olatunji received a sentence of four months of community service and two months of community service.
”Osundele Oladapo Daniel was ordered by Justice Bayo Taiwo to surrender a white Toyota Venza automobile worth N7 million to the Federal Government of Nigeria and pay the sum of $16,671 in reparation, the EFCC said.
Other prisoners received similar orders, including forfeiting to the government all items taken from their victims and returning them to them.
