IGP to Serve 3 Months In Prison Over this Offence
On Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, to three months in prison for violating a 2011 court order.
Usman Baba conviction followed a suit filed by Patrick Okoli, a police officer who was unjustly and compulsorily resigned from the Nigerian Police Force.
The court further ordered the petitioner to pay N10 million in special and general damages for the unlawful, illegal, and unconstitutional deprivation of his (Patrick’s) rights and privileges as a senior officer of the Nigeria Police Force from 1993 to the present.
According to the crediblenews.com.ng, the court ruled in a judgement delivered by Justice M. O. Olajuwon that Usman Baba should be committed to prison and remanded in detention for three months, or until his office obeys a court order issued since October 21, 2011. Olajuwon stated that despite the Police Service Commission’s recommendation for Okoli’s reinstatement into the NPF, which was upheld by the court, Usman Baba failed to comply with the order.
“If at the end of three months, the contemnor remains refractory and refuses to purge his contempt, he must be committed for another period until he purges his contempt,” Olajuwon added.
On Tuesday, the Force spokeswoman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, told our correspondent that the police would reply to the verdict soon.
“We will answer shortly,” he said. It concerns the period between 1993 and 2011, when the incumbent IGP, Usman Baba, was not in the office.”
