NAF Investigates Alleged Civilian Casualties in Zamfara Airstrike

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched an investigation into allegations of civilian casualties during an airstrike on Friday in Zurmi Local Government Area, Zamfara State. The strike, part of Operation Fansan Yamma, targeted bandits terrorizing the region.

Reports of Civilian Deaths

Following the operation, reports surfaced claiming that 16 residents, including members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard and local vigilantes, were mistakenly killed in the air raid.

While the NAF initially hailed the operation’s success in eliminating key allies of the notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, and rescuing kidnapped hostages, it was silent on civilian casualty allegations.

Reacting to the incident, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal confirmed on Sunday that members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and vigilantes were among those killed.

NAF’s Response

In a statement issued late Sunday, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, NAF spokesperson, acknowledged the allegations of civilian casualties with “grave concern.”

“The Nigerian Air Force, in the recent airstrikes at Tungar Kara in Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, dealt a decisive blow to bandits terrorising villages in the area. However, the NAF views with grave concern reports of the loss of civilian lives in the course of the operation,” Akinboyewa said.

The Air Force assured the public that a comprehensive investigation is underway to ascertain the veracity of the claims.

“As a responsible and professional custodian of airpower for the nation’s security, the NAF believes in the absolute value of the life of every Nigerian. The outcome of this investigation will be duly communicated to inform and reassure the public,” he added.

Akinboyewa reiterated NAF’s commitment to minimizing civilian harm during military operations, emphasizing their focus on combating banditry and restoring peace in the North-West region.

“Our mission in the North-West remains to combat banditry and restore peace. The safety and well-being of all Nigerians are of utmost importance. We will work closely with all relevant authorities to unravel the facts and take appropriate steps,” he stated.
