Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road Project: Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Nationwide Connectivity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to completing and expanding major infrastructure projects, on the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project, a strategic highway linking southern and northern Nigeria.

Represented by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani at the inauguration ceremony of Section II of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project on Sunday, President Tinubu emphasized the strategic role of the highway in connecting regions, boosting economic activity, and ensuring seamless travel across the country.
“My administration’s vision is to overhaul Nigeria’s roadways by completing and expanding critical infrastructure projects like the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project,” Tinubu stated.
He acknowledged that while some road projects began under previous administrations, his government has successfully resolved funding challenges and restructured key partnerships to accelerate completion timelines.
The Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road Project: A Key National Priority
Described as one of Nigeria’s most vital transport arteries, the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project connects the Federal Capital Territory to at least 12 states across the North-Central, North-West, and North-East regions. Tinubu highlighted the road’s socio-economic importance in enhancing trade, transportation, and regional development.
In a bid to maximize the project’s benefits, the President approved an additional 11-kilometre extension to link the road to the Aminu Kano International Airport. A further 10 kilometres will be added at the beginning of Section I between Kogi State and Abuja to improve road access and connectivity.

Solar Lighting and Safety Enhancements for the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road Project
President Tinubu also directed that the entire length of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project be fitted with solar-powered street lights. This move, he explained, will enhance night-time visibility, reduce accidents, and increase safety for commuters.
“No region is left behind in the sweeping infrastructure transformation taking place under my administration,” Tinubu emphasized, pointing to Kaduna and other parts of Northern Nigeria as major beneficiaries of his government’s development initiatives.
Umahi: Concrete Pavement to Ensure Durability on the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road Project
Minister of Works, David Umahi, lauded Tinubu’s leadership and strategic investment in Nigeria’s infrastructure sector, especially in road development. He confirmed that the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project will be constructed using reinforced concrete pavement, a more durable alternative to asphalt.
Umahi disclosed that the 700-kilometre project comprises 350 kilometres each way, stretching from Abuja through Niger State to Kaduna, Zaria, and Kano.
So far, Julius Berger has completed 480 kilometres of the Kano section. The remaining 280 kilometres will be handled by Infiouest Construction Limited, a firm Umahi described as reliable and performance-driven.
Massive Investment in the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road Project
The minister revealed that Sections I and III, totaling 118 kilometres, have already been awarded at a cost of N252 billion, with 30 percent of the funds paid upfront to the contractor. Section II, which spans 82 kilometres each way (164 kilometres total), is estimated to cost N525 billion.
Altogether, the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project is expected to cost nearly one trillion naira, making it one of the largest infrastructure investments in the history of Nigeria’s road sector.
Umahi promised to return to the site in 30 days to assess progress and ensure timely completion.
Nationwide Engagement and Accountability on Road Projects
As part of efforts to promote transparency, Umahi announced plans for zonal engagements across all six geopolitical zones. These sessions will serve to update the public on road and bridge achievements under Tinubu’s administration.
Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, echoed Umahi’s sentiments and hailed Tinubu’s inclusive leadership.
“This is a president who works for all regions. His impact is visible in Sokoto, Lagos, Badagry, and across the nation,” Goronyo said.
He also praised the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project as a legacy initiative that will bring “renewed hope and positive change” to millions of Nigerians.
A Call for Public Support to Complete the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road Project
Goronyo urged communities along the route to cooperate with contractors and local authorities to ensure the project’s smooth execution. He emphasized that supporting national development efforts is key to building a transformed and prosperous Nigeria.
President Tinubu’s administration has pledged to continue prioritizing projects that foster unity, economic growth, and development. The Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project stands out as a prime example of this vision taking shape on the ground.
