Adamu Adamu, Nigerian education minister, has disclosed that the 65-year retirement age for teachers in public schools has already begun to be implemented by the federal government.
He said the new policy is meant to address the career path, pay, professional teaching standards, qualifications, deployment, and administration of teachers.
The education minister also revealed that teachers would now have 40 years of pensionable service.
Adamu Adamu, spoke through the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr David Adejo, at the beginning of the events scheduled for World Teachers Day in 2022, with the theme “The Transformation of Education Begins With Teachers.”
The Minister asserts that the 2022 event will highlight the importance of providing teachers with the tools they need to restructure the educational system in a way that ensures high-quality instruction and learning while also igniting technological progress to meet the constantly changing needs of a country’s growth and development.

Malam Adamu stated that teachers who have shown extraordinary dedication to their profession will also receive the President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Award at the event in 2022. (PTSEA).
Meanwhile, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, who also spoke at the occasion, said that he would draw attention to the essential part that teachers “are expected to play in reforming and moulding the future of education in the middle of rising societal requirements and issues of the 21st century.”
Adamu Adamu said: “Indeed, the right number of qualified teachers is needed, and they should be provided with access to continuing professional development, improved status, and working conditions, as well as be empowered, motivated, and supported.”
His words: “The NUT remains grateful to President Muhammadu Buhari, for signing into law the “Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Bill” which provides for the retirement of teachers on the attainment of 65 years or 40 years of pensionable service, and look forward to the implementation of the new retirement age and other approvals announced by the Federal Government at the 2020 edition of the World Teachers’ Day celebration.”
