The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) says it has suspended the protest in Lagos over the continued shutdown of public universities by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The university students protest paralysed activities at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos on Monday as they blocked the major road leading in and out of the airport, causing gridlock. Air travelers, motorists and other road users were trapped; just as many flights were rescheduled.
Many passengers missed their flights on account of the blockage created by the students.
The students had earlier vowed to continue the protest today in Lagos and extend it to the seaports to demand an end to the seven-month ASUU strike.
Daily Trust however quoted Chairman of NANS, Lagos axis, Olusesi Tolulope, as saying in an interview granted on Tuesday that the protest was suspended as a result of the intervention by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila.
Gbajabiamila is expected to meet the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other stakeholders over the lingering strike.
“We don’t have any plan to protest today because we want to wait for the outcome of the meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila,” he said.
