Afenifere Slams National Assembly Over Rivers State Emergency Declaration

ABEOKUTA – The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has strongly criticized the National Assembly for endorsing the state of emergency declared in Rivers State. The group accused lawmakers of violating the 1999 Constitution and failing to protect Nigeria’s democracy.

In a communique issued at the end of its National Caucus meeting held at the residence of its late former leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State, Afenifere expressed its displeasure over the National Assembly’s actions. The statement, signed by Afenifere’s Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, and National Publicity Secretary, Prince Justice Faloye, condemned both President Bola Tinubu’s decision and the lawmakers’ support.

Afenifere: National Assembly Betrayed Democracy

According to Afenifere, the endorsement of the state of emergency by the 10th National Assembly is a betrayal of democratic values and a violation of constitutional provisions.

“Contrary to the expectation of Nigerians, but in a manner consistent with its proven character, the 10th Assembly in both chambers not only joined hands with the President in further desecrating the already fragile 1999 Constitution but also demonstrated a lack of courage to defend the democratic rights of the Nigerian people,” the communique stated.

The group emphasized that the constitution requires a two-thirds majority of the National Assembly for such a critical decision, and accused the lawmakers of using a voice vote to obscure compliance with this legal requirement.

Violation of Separation of Powers

Afenifere further criticized what it described as the erosion of Nigeria’s democratic institutions through executive overreach. The group noted that by endorsing the state of emergency, the National Assembly had compromised the principle of separation of powers.

“A new crisis has emerged in Nigeria’s constitutional democracy, where the executive arm of government exercises unchecked power over the legislature. This is reminiscent of how Adolf Hitler hijacked German democracy,” Afenifere warned.

The organization also noted that the hasty approval of the state of emergency sets a dangerous precedent for governance in Nigeria, where the executive can suppress opposition under the guise of maintaining order.

Call for National Assembly Leadership to Step Down

Afenifere urged the leadership of the National Assembly to resign, citing a loss of credibility and integrity.

“The present leadership of the National Assembly should step aside in the interest of decency, integrity, and respect for the separation of powers, which is the foundation of our democracy,” the communique read.

The organization also criticized the recent vote of confidence in the Senate President, labeling it as an indication of a crisis of trust. Afenifere argued that such a move only confirmed the erosion of democratic values within the legislative arm of government.
