The Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes, and Associated Institutions which gave a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government (SSAUTHRIAI) on Friday over their unpaid hazard allowance has started counting
The group issued an ultimatum to the FG to refund hazard allowance arrears owing to its members.
After a two-day meeting in Calabar on October 12 and 13, the Association issued a statement signed by its Acting Chairman, Mr Kabir Mustapha, and Acting Secretary, Mr Joseph Ugwoke.
To avert an industrial crisis in the health sector, the association decided that it could no longer guarantee continuous services if its members were not paid all arrears owing within one week.
The Association said that despite numerous letters to the Federal Government, the payment had been delayed, and that the government had selectively paid doctors for four and five months in tranches while ignoring other health employees.
Concerning the COVID-19 Special Inducement Allowance, the association demanded the federal government to pay the remaining 40%, or two months, owed to its members.
The association said: “We seek payment of 40% of the remaining two months’ balance to our members who were wrongfully paid 10%.”
“Also, the association is dismayed by the rate at which health workers, particularly professionals, are leaving the country for greener pastures.”

The association explained that “this is due to the poor condition of our health facilities, a lack of consumables for health staff to deal with, and inadequate welfare packages.”
The association took advantage of the opportunity to encourage the federal government to implement the Sept. 30, 2017 agreement on revising the Consolidated Health Salary Structure as soon as possible (CONHESS).
It further encouraged the government at all levels to immediately remit deducted but unremitted payments to unions and cooperatives, as well as to refund third-party deductions.
